Taliban spokesman promises women’s rights, media freedom, and amnesty for government officials

In their first press conference after taking charge of the Afghan capital, the Taliban has promised women’s rights within the framework of Islam, media freedom, and amnesty for government officials.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the armed group’s spokesman, said the group wished for peaceful relations with other countries and that no group will be allowed to use Afghan territory for attacks against any nation.

“I would like to assure the international community, including the United States that nobody will be harmed in Afghanistan,” he said, adding the group will not allow their territory to be used against anybody, any country in the world. “We would like to live peacefully. We don’t want any internal enemies and any external enemies.”

The Taliban made assurances to Afghans and the world that there will be no revenge attacks on anyone who worked or fought with the US.

Declaring general amnesty for former Afghan government officials, the spokesman said they are “not going to [seek] revenge [on] anybody, and don’t have any grudges against anybody.”

He also said that the new Afghan government is going to be strong, inclusive and Islamic.

He insisted that the Taliban welcome free and independent media, adding that journalists will be allowed to critique their work.

They also said the group was would allow women to work and study within the framework of Shariah law.
