The U.S. Air Force awarded a $270 million contract to American leading defense manufacturer Lockheed Martin to modernize F-22 Raptor fighter jets with advanced infrared threat-detection sensors.

The fifth-generation fighter jets will be integrated with the next-generation infrared defensive sensors system developed by Lockheed Martin to enhance the survivability and lethality of the aircraft. The integration of infrared sensors will also enhance F-22 Raptors’ capabilities to detect and track aerial threats.

According to the Lockheed Martin statement, in addition to managing the integration of the Infrared Defensive System (IRDS) on the F-22, Lockheed Martin will also support the system integration on other platforms.

The IRDS is made up of a distributed array of Tactical Infrared Search and Track (TacIRST) sensors that can help the aircraft in tracking and countering threats like enemy aircraft and missiles.

Vice president of Missions Systems at Lockheed Martin, Hank Tucker highlighted in a statement, “We’re committed to supporting the Air Force through continuous innovation of capabilities to deter and defeat evolving threats.”

Tucker added, “We understand the need for advanced and versatile infrared systems like IRDS that will make pilots’ missions more survivable and lethal against current and future adversaries.”

Vice president of the F-22 program at Lockheed Martin, Justin Taylor also praised the move and said, “Lockheed Martin is proud to continue partnering with the Air Force on essential modernization efforts for the Raptor, leveraging our expertise in 5th Generation aircraft and air dominance systems to integrate capabilities that ensure uninterrupted U.S. air superiority today and into the future.”

F-22 Raptor

The F-22 Raptor remains a critical component of the U.S. Air Force’s air dominance strategy, combining cutting-edge technology with superior performance to address evolving threats. It represents a significant advancement in aerial combat capabilities, combining stealth, supercruise, maneuverability, and integrated avionics

A standout feature of the F-22 is its advanced stealth technology, which significantly reduces its radar cross-section, allowing it to operate undetected in hostile environments. This stealth capability is complemented by its supercruise function, enabling the aircraft to sustain supersonic speeds without engaging afterburners, thus enhancing fuel efficiency and operational range.

The F-22 is powered by two Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-100 engines, each providing approximately 35,000 pounds of thrust. These engines enable the aircraft to achieve supercruise—sustained supersonic flight without afterburners—allowing it to cover greater distances more efficiently.

The aircraft’s advanced avionics suite integrates radar, weapons control, and electronic warfare systems, providing pilots with comprehensive situational awareness. This integration allows for simultaneous air-to-air and air-to-ground operations, enhancing mission flexibility.

The F-22 is equipped with an M61A2 20mm cannon and can carry a combination of air-to-air missiles, such as the AIM-120 AMRAAM and AIM-9 Sidewinder, as well as precision-guided air-to-ground munitions. These weapons are equipped internally to maintain the aircraft’s stealth profile.
