The U.S. Navy Nimitz-Class carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln is on the move from San Diego to its routine deployment with a unique distinction. Abraham Lincoln has become the first-ever U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier to be skippered by a female captain. The ship departed with its strike group for regular global marine security support operation under the command of Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt.

Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt said in the release: “These Sailors are incredible professionals who have trained exceptionally hard to ensure they are ready for any operational obligations required of us on deployment. They are absolutely prepared for today’s deployment, and I have no doubt they will represent our nation proudly as we defend our national interests.”

According to Rear Admiral J.T. Anderson, commander, Carrier Strike Group 3, “The entire CSG 3 team is trained and ready to deter and, if necessary, win conflicts as called upon by our nation’s leaders.

“As we leave today on this routine, scheduled deployment, I know the Sailors and Marines of this team will continue to serve this great nation and its people. It is our honor to do so,” Rear Admiral Anderson added.

The USS Abraham Lincoln is part of the command staff of the Carrier Strike Group 3 (CSG 3) of the U.S. Navy 3rd fleet. The CSG 3 consists of Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, along with Carrier Air Wing 9, the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay, and the guided-missile destroyers from Destroyer Squadron 21. “U.S. 3rd Fleet works together with our allies and partners to advance freedom of navigation, the rule of law, and other principles that underpin security for the Indo-Pacific region,” the release added.

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier ships are powered by Westinghouse A4W Nuclear Reactors along with steam turbines and diesel engines that provide them with a displacement capacity of 116,800 tons. USS Abraham Lincoln was commissioned to the U.S. Navy in 1989 and since then it has served on several maritime missions and operations.

The USSR Abraham Lincoln has spent most of its deployment service in the Persian Gulf, where it served as one of the major bases to carry out operations in the Middle East. During its fourth deployment in the Persian Gulf in 1998 USS Abraham Lincoln provided essential assistance in Operation Southern Watch. The ship was used to launch Tomahawk Cruise Missiles from the waters for the first time to target two establishments in Sudan and Afghanistan, under the operation Southern Watch. The latest of the USS Abraham Lincoln’s engagement includes Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq under the command of U.S. Navy Carrier Strike Group 3.
