South Korea, Israel sign defense deals on radar systems and aviation tech
Asia-Pacific, Middle East, News October 23, 2021 1 Comment on South Korea, Israel sign defense deals on radar systems and aviation techSouth Korea’s defense company Hanwha Systems signed partnership deals with Israeli aerospace firms Elbit Systems and Elta Systems to push for cooperation in aviation technologies and the export of an advanced radar system.
The defense and ICT unit of Hanwha Group said on Thursday that it has signed partnership deals with two Israeli defense companies on the sidelines of the Seoul International Aerospace and Defense Exhibition 2021 (ADEX 2021) at Seongnam Airbase.
Under the agreement with Elta Systems, Hanwha will push for the export of its active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar system for civilian use. The more advanced and efficient components of the system are being designed by the firm to detect and track multiple enemy targets.
According to a statement by Hanwha Systems, the company will explore opportunities for “partnership in urban air mobility (UAM) and other aviation electronic technologies to create synergy” with an Israeli firm, Elbit Systems.
Israel’s Elbit company is a leading developer of avionics equipment, including head-mounted display (HMD) that provides aircraft pilots with 360-degree images of the scene, and project information with enhanced situational awareness, Korea Bizwire reported.
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) also signed an agreement to increase partnership on deadly drone technology, during ADEX 2021.
KAI and IAI signed a memorandum of understanding on a loitering munitions program for enhancing the strike missions’ effectiveness against adversaries’ air defenses. This memorandum would facilitate the development of a new lightweight, modular, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and secure a new concept weapons system that will maximize the effectiveness of suppression and destruction of enemy air defense missions.
Executive Vice President of Marketing at IAI Yehuda Lahav said “IAI is proud to continue expanding our collaboration with KAI, and share our combat-proven capabilities in the field of loitering munitions”.
According to a joint statement, “Korean Air’s expertise in UAV development and production with Insitu’s state-of-the-art UAV technologies, including high-performance mission equipment, system optimization, and manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) operations”, would create new synergies between the IAI and KAI.
Executive Vice President and head of future business division at KAI, Chang Heon-han said, “With the goal of leading the future of unmanned aerial vehicles, we are dedicated to developing next-generation unmanned aerial vehicle technology, and we will develop solutions that meet various customer needs.”
The new concept weapon system would support long-endurance reconnaissance missions and enhance the strike capabilities of South Korea. In addition, with the combined capabilities of UAVs and missiles and loitering munitions, the new weapons system would also be able to target “especially sensitive and moving targets” with more precision.
