Poland has signed a $10 billion deal to purchase 96 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters from U.S. defense giant Boeing. The agreement, signed on August 13, 2024, marks the latest step in Warsaw’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its military capabilities amidst growing security concerns in the region.

The acquisition falls under Poland’s KRUK Attack Helicopter program, a strategic initiative aimed at modernizing the country’s air combat forces. The deal includes the delivery of the AH-64E Apache helicopters, the most advanced variant of the combat-proven Apache line, which is renowned for its versatility, durability, and state-of-the-art technology. The helicopters are expected to significantly enhance Poland’s defense posture, providing robust operational capability and improved interoperability with NATO allies.

“We are honored the Government of Poland has placed their confidence in us,” said Vince Logsdon, vice president of International Business Development for Boeing Defense, Space & Security. “The AH-64E Apache helicopters will strengthen Poland’s operational capability and interoperability with the U.S., NATO, and allied nations. We look forward to delivering this unmatched capability.”

The deal is historic for Boeing’s Vertical Lift division, representing the largest Foreign Military Sales (FMS) order in its history. Kathleen Jolivette, vice president and general manager of Vertical Lift, highlighted the significance of the agreement, noting, “Poland’s commitment to procure 96 aircraft represents the largest FMS order in the history of Boeing’s Vertical Lift division and will not only make Poland our 19th global Apache customer but the largest operator outside of the United States.”

The Polish Ministry of National Defense’s decision to purchase the AH-64E Apache was made in September 2022, reflecting Poland’s strategic focus on strengthening its military capabilities in response to regional threats, particularly from Russia. The decision comes at a time of heightened tensions in Eastern Europe, following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

As part of the deal, Boeing and the Polish government have also entered into an offset agreement designed to benefit Poland’s domestic defense industry. The agreement includes provisions for the maintenance and support of the Apache fleet by Polish defense contractors, as well as the establishment of training programs and the development of a composite laboratory in Poland. These initiatives aim to boost the capabilities of the Polish defense industry, create highly skilled jobs, and spur technological advancements, leading to substantial economic benefits.

The AH-64E Apache, the most modern configuration of the Apache helicopter, is designed to perform a wide range of missions, from precision strikes to close air support. Equipped with advanced sensors, avionics, and weapons systems, the Apache can operate in diverse environments and provide critical battlefield intelligence. The helicopter’s proven combat performance, combined with its ability to integrate with other NATO forces, makes it a valuable asset for Poland as it seeks to bolster its defense capabilities.

Boeing has been manufacturing the AH-64 Apache for over 40 years at its facility in Mesa, Arizona. The helicopter has earned a reputation as one of the most reliable and versatile attack helicopters in the world, with more than 1,290 Apaches currently in service globally. Boeing’s Global Services division will provide ongoing sustainment and training support for the Polish Apache fleet, ensuring that the helicopters remain operationally ready and effective.

The Polish government’s decision to invest in the AH-64E Apache reflects its broader strategy of modernizing its military forces and enhancing its ability to deter potential threats. As NATO’s eastern flank, Poland plays a crucial role in the alliance’s collective defense strategy, and the acquisition of these advanced attack helicopters will significantly contribute to the country’s defense posture.

This $10 billion deal is not just a significant milestone for Poland’s military, but also a testament to the strong defense ties between the United States and Poland.
