Greece has announced its decision to supply 24 Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft and anti-missile munitions. This aid is aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s ability to fend off persistent Russian air attacks.

The missiles, sourced from the stocks of the Greek navy and air force, have been assessed as no longer operationally useful for Greece’s military forces. These munitions are the latest addition to a broader defense assistance package that Greece has committed to Ukraine, which includes artillery shells, weaponry, and other ammunition.

The Sea Sparrow missiles, which are approximately 40 years old, have carried a renewed relevance in the context of Ukraine’s conflict with Russia. Under the Pentagon’s innovative FrankenSAM program, Soviet-era Buk air defense systems have been modified to fire these missiles.
