Europe, News June 25, 2024 No Comments on Germany finalizes contract with Netherlands’ Damen Naval to build additional F126 frigatesThe Dutch shipbuilder, Damen Naval, has secured a contract from the German Navy to build two more Niedersachsen-class F126 frigates, enhancing the fleet’s capability and bolstering Germany’s maritime defense strategy.
This decision, approved by Berlin’s federal parliament’s budget committee, marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to modernize its naval forces. Construction of the frigates will be conducted entirely in Germany, emphasizing local manufacturing and expertise. Damen Naval anticipates delivering the vessels in 2033 and 2034, respectively.
Managing Director of Damen Naval, Roland Briene, highlighted the strategic significance of this contract. “It is the quickest way to expand and modernize the surface fleet of the German Navy. This decision also benefits the German procurement organization and the involved industry. Having more ships of the same class brings many advantages,” Briene stated, underscoring the operational efficiencies and logistical benefits of a standardized fleet.
The first F126 frigate is slated for delivery by 2028, setting the pace for subsequent vessels in the series. This timeline aligns with Germany’s strategic naval objectives, ensuring a phased integration of new capabilities into the fleet while maintaining operational readiness.
These new frigates will gradually replace Germany’s aging Brandenburg-class ships, which have served since the mid-1990s. The transition to the F126 class signifies a technological leap forward, incorporating advancements in naval architecture, combat systems, and operational versatility.
