The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics a contract worth up to $808.6 million to produce MK 54 MOD 1 lightweight torpedo kits. The agreement includes test equipment, spare parts, provisioned item orders, engineering support, and hardware assistance for the MK 54 Lightweight Torpedo Program.

The work will be carried out in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, with completion expected by December 2032. This long-term contract ensures that the US Navy and allied forces will have access to state-of-the-art torpedo technology for nearly a decade.

The MK 54 MOD 1 lightweight torpedo is a critical asset for the Navy, providing advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. The contract will help modernize the Navy’s torpedo inventory, ensuring continued superiority in undersea warfare.

Laura Hooks, Vice President and General Manager of Maritime and Strategic Systems at General Dynamics Mission Systems emphasized the significance of the contract:

“Our Progeny Systems employees have been providing advanced torpedo electronics to the US and allied Navies for 18 years. This contract ensures that our surface ships and aircraft will have the most modern and capable torpedoes in the world for many years to come.”

The contract builds upon the expertise of Progeny Systems, which was acquired by General Dynamics Mission Systems in 2022. Progeny has a long history of delivering high-tech torpedo electronics, further strengthening the company’s role in the defense sector.

MK 54 MOD 1 Lightweight Torpedo: Features and Capabilities

The MK 54 MOD 1 is the latest iteration of the Navy’s lightweight torpedo, designed for use on surface ships, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft. Due to its advanced guidance and targeting systems, it is widely regarded as one of the most effective ASW weapons.

The MK 54 MOD 1 lightweight torpedo is a highly versatile and advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) weapon designed for deployment from multiple platforms. Weighing approximately 276 kg and measuring 8.5 feet in length, it is significantly lighter than other torpedoes in its class, making it ideal for use on surface ships, submarines, and aircraft. The MK 54 has a diameter of 12.75 inches, which is standard for lightweight torpedoes, allowing seamless integration with existing launch systems.
