BAE Systems finalized a $2.5 billion contract on December 6, 2024, to produce additional CV90 combat vehicles for Denmark and Sweden. The latest contract aims to upgrade and reinforce the existing fleet of vehicles amid ongoing security threats.

Denmark’s portion of the order includes 115 new CV9035 MkIIIC vehicles, more than tripling its current fleet of 40 CV90s to 155. This expansion aligns with Denmark’s commitment to strengthening its armed forces and bolstering NATO’s collective security.

“The infantry fighting vehicle is an essential component of the heavy brigade we are currently building. The 115 new vehicles will significantly enhance Denmark’s contribution to collective security and international operations,” stated Major General Peter Boysen, chief of the Royal Danish Army.

The new vehicles will serve as a cornerstone of Denmark’s heavy brigade, providing robust firepower, advanced protection, and improved mobility for the nation’s military. These units will enhance the Royal Danish Army’s operational readiness for both national defense and international missions.

Sweden is acquiring 50 additional CV90s, which will bolster its fleet and enhance its ability to conduct defense operations. Sweden has been a long-time operator of the CV90, and its investment reaffirms the vehicle’s role as a critical component of the nation’s defense infrastructure.

Additionally, Sweden has already delivered 50 CV90s to Ukraine, with the current deal including financing for more vehicles destined for the embattled nation. The contribution highlights Sweden’s proactive stance in supporting Ukraine as it continues to resist Russian military advances.

Support for Ukraine

The CV90’s presence in Ukraine is set to grow further. Sweden and Denmark, along with financial support from the Netherlands, have been instrumental in ensuring Ukraine receives these advanced combat vehicles. Dutch-built CV90s are scheduled to begin arriving in Ukraine by 2026, adding to the fleet already in use on the battlefield.

The Netherlands’ involvement in financing Ukraine-bound CV90s demonstrates a coordinated effort among European allies to reinforce Ukraine’s military capabilities. These vehicles are expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing Ukraine’s ability to mount defensive and offensive operations against Russian forces.

The CV90 variant ordered by Denmark and Sweden features cutting-edge upgrades, including a new turret design that represents a significant leap forward in technology. This advanced turret improves targeting precision and operational efficiency, making the CV90 a formidable tool on the modern battlefield.

BAE Systems emphasized that the new vehicles are built to the same standard as the latest CV90 upgrades for the Netherlands, ensuring consistency and interoperability among NATO allies. With its modular design, the CV90 can be adapted to meet various mission requirements, ranging from reconnaissance and infantry support to direct combat roles.

Since its inception, BAE Systems has produced 1,900 CV90 vehicles in 17 variants for 10 European countries, eight of which are NATO members. The platform’s adaptability and performance have made it a trusted choice for nations seeking reliable infantry fighting vehicles capable of handling diverse operational scenarios.

The CV90’s combination of advanced armor, superior mobility, and cutting-edge weaponry makes it a standout in its class. The vehicle is equipped with sophisticated battlefield management systems, enhancing situational awareness and command effectiveness. Its ability to traverse rugged terrain while providing unparalleled protection and firepower ensures its relevance in both conventional and asymmetric warfare.

Strategic importance

For Denmark and Sweden, the acquisition marks a significant step in modernizing their armed forces and aligning with NATO’s broader strategic objectives. For Ukraine, the continued delivery of CV90s offers a lifeline as it fights to defend its sovereignty.

BAE Systems’ success in securing this contract reaffirms its position as a leader in the defense industry, delivering state-of-the-art solutions to meet the evolving needs of its customers. As production ramps up, the company’s role in strengthening European security and supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts will undoubtedly come into sharper focus.
