China has unveiled a new early warning and control aircraft, the KJ-3000. Built on the Y-20 platform, the new aircraft represents a significant enhancement in the surveillance and operational range, particularly in strategic regions like the South China Sea and the Western Pacific.
The KJ-3000 promises to be the most advanced addition to China’s airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) technology, offering capabilities that surpass existing platforms such as the KJ-500 and KJ-2000. According to Chinese media reports, the aircraft’s enhanced radar and operational features reflect a substantial step forward in the PLA Air Force’s (PLAAF) ability to monitor and manage complex airspace scenarios.
At the heart of the KJ-3000 lies its advanced radar system. The aircraft features an overhead-mounted dome, hinting at the presence of two active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars. These radars are believed to rotate, ensuring 360-degree coverage.

The latter is crucial for powering the aircraft’s sophisticated sensors and computing systems.
The WS-20 engines not only enhance the KJ-3000’s performance but also contribute to a broader shift within the PLA Air Force toward self-reliance in engine technology. By moving away from Russian-made components, China is demonstrating its growing expertise in aerospace engineering.
One of the KJ-3000’s standout features is its air-to-air refueling capability, which greatly extends its operational range. This improvement ensures the aircraft can remain airborne longer, covering vast distances or sustaining operations in contested areas.
In addition, the KJ-3000’s ability to operate at higher altitudes offers strategic benefits. Turboprop platforms like the KJ-500 have limited operational ceilings, making them more vulnerable to threats. The KJ-3000’s ability to maintain a safer distance from enemy fighters while offering expanded radar coverage represents a critical advantage for the PLAAF.
The development of the KJ-3000 comes on the heels of recent sightings of what are believed to be China’s first sixth-generation fighter jets, underscoring the rapid modernization of the country’s military capabilities. The KJ-3000 is expected to replace the KJ-2000, which, despite its advanced features, exists in limited numbers with only four operational units.
By addressing capability gaps, the KJ-3000 will play a pivotal role in expanding the PLAAF’s operational capabilities. Its ability to function as an airborne command center makes it an indispensable asset in coordinating military operations, especially in potential conflict zones.
As the KJ-3000 moves closer to operational status, its potential to redefine surveillance and operational dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region cannot be underestimated.
