Africa, Americas, Asia-Pacific September 10, 2021 No Comments on BRICS members stress vigilance to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a haven for terrorist activitiesLeaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) for the 13th BRICS summit in a virtual setting held discussions on the ongoing situation in Afghanistan.
The meeting was focused on discussing different issues however the Afghanistan situation was the focus of attention for all the participants.
The joint statement at the end of the summit read that “We underscore the priority of fighting terrorism, including preventing attempts by terrorist organizations to use Afghan territory as terrorist sanctuary and to carry out attacks against other countries, as well as drug trade within Afghanistan.”
President Vladimir Putin stated the “U.S.’s sudden withdrawal from Afghanistan has left the regional countries under a looming threat of desalinization and violence that should be addressed immediately. It is still not clear that how international community is going to deal with this rising threat of security issue and humanitarian crisis.”
Apart from the issues related to Afghanistan, the BRICS members also discussed the Iran nuclear deal and how it can have an impact on the region. The members of the BRICS organization also showed their concerns to the ongoing debate about Iran and its nuclear capabilities in the light of regional peace and stability.
The BRICS members reaffirmed their commitment to provide humanitarian aid to Afghanistan as well as keeping a close eye on the deteriorating security situation in the country.
China’s President Xi Jinping stated that “Over the past 15 years five BRICS members have made an example for the world through enhancing strategic cooperation and political trust in the spirit of openness, inclusiveness and equality, respected each other’s social system and development path, and explored a sound way for countries to interact with each other.”
Apart from Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, and South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa also addressed the virtual event.
