Europe, News No Comments on Airbus to develop and launch Germany’s next-generation military satellite for $2.2 billion

Airbus has won a $2.27 billion contract from the German Armed Forces for the development and deployment of next-generation secure military satellites. This 15-year SATCOMBw 3 contract encompasses geostationary satellites, ground segments, launch services, and ongoing operational support.

The SATCOMBw 3 program is the successor to the COMSATBw 1B and 2B satellites, boasting cutting-edge technologies to meet evolving military communication needs. The new system is based on the advanced Eurostar Neo platform, which is renowned for its high performance and adaptability.

Each satellite in this series will weigh approximately six metric tons and will be equipped to handle the rapid advancements in digitalization and the increasing demands for data transfer.

These satellites will significantly enhance Germany’s military communication infrastructure, providing robust, secure, and reliable communications channels for the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces). The advanced payloads, solar arrays, and overall operation will predominantly be developed and integrated in Germany, emphasizing the strong domestic presence in the contract.

In addition to the satellite deployment, the contract includes significant upgrades to the existing ground segment. This ensures that both current and new satellites can be launched and managed effectively over the next 15 years, with potential for extension.

This comprehensive approach guarantees a future-proof solution, enabling seamless command and information capabilities for the German military globally.

The SATCOMBw 3 system is pivotal for Germany’s autonomous and independently deployable communications and information services. It ensures that the Bundeswehr can fulfill its NATO commitments by maintaining robust global command and communication capabilities.

Airbus Defense and Space CEO Michael Schoellhorn highlighted the strategic importance of this contract, stating: “After the success of the SATCOMBw Stage 2 program, which we have been delivering since 2009, this latest contract reinforces our strategic partnership with the Bundeswehr, providing them with a greatly enhanced secure milsatcom capability that is future-proofed into the 2040s.”

The contract involves a strong collaboration with the German industry, featuring partners such as Bremen-based OHB and numerous smaller companies. Key elements of the satellites, including advanced payload guidance, integration, and solar arrays, will be developed in Germany. This not only strengthens the national industrial base but also ensures that cutting-edge technology and expertise are harnessed within the country.

Airbus’s role in this contract underscores its commitment to delivering innovative and secure satellite communication solutions. The SATCOMBw 3 project represents a significant step forward in military communications, ensuring that Germany’s defense capabilities remain robust and resilient in the face of evolving global challenges.

Schoellhorn expressed gratitude for the opportunity to develop and build this leading-edge system, particularly at a time when Western democracies are facing challenges and the European institutional space ecosystem is navigating difficulties.
